Behind Closed Doors – B.A. Paris

5/5 stars

“I cry even harder, thinking of how it could have been, of how I thought it would be.”

In Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris, we follow the disturbingly haunting story of Jack and Grace, the seemingly perfect couple. As they are, Jack, the wealthy lawyer who has never lost a case, and Grace, the stay-at-home wife who cooks and gardens, their friends are jealous of the way their lives fit seamlessly, beautifully together. Their love story is beautiful, and Jack’s determination to fit Grace’s disabled younger sister, Milly, into their home, their lives, is endearing. Despite them being newlyweds, their lives seem perfect to anyone and everyone around them.

The issues lies in their strong need to always be together. Grace never answers the phone, never goes out to lunch alone, never takes anything with her when she leaves the house… Of course, Jack’s always there, so he’ll take charge.

In this elegant novel about love and survival told in the first person present view, we follow Grace’s day to day life as she struggles to figure out how to do what’s best, not only for herself, but for her younger sister Milly.

Without spoiling anything, let’s dive right into my thoughts.

For the first hundred pages, I was so irritated with this book. I had to take, what I call, “chapter breaks” every fifteen minutes because of how frustrated I was with the predictability of this novel. However, somewhere around the middle of the book, my predictions were beginning to falter, and the unexpected was taking its place.

The last few lines of this haunting thriller sent chills up my spine, and I shrieked out loud. I couldn’t stop thinking about how genius this book was for days after reading… I still can’t stop thinking about it, honestly. Despite complaining to my mother about how she has terrible taste in books (she picked this one for me), I ended up loving her favorite book, probably, more than she did.

If you’re not big into thrillers, this is a good one to change your mind for sure.
